Math That Clicks: KCFI’s LearnCon, CBS Empower Teachers with Multimedia Strategies for Foundational Numeracy

By John Maverick Morales

In celebration of National Teachers’ Month (NTM), over 8,800 teachers, learning facilitators, and parents joined the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) Learning Conference (LearnCon) “Math That Clicks: Building Foundational Numeracy through Multimedia-Enhanced Teaching Approaches,” which introduced strategies and digital tools for making foundational numeracy more accessible and engaging for young learners. The LearnCon, held in partnership with China Bank Savings (CBS) on September 12, 2026, was the first of four LearnCons that KCFI conducted.

“For this conference, we will introduce how multimedia can support you to make mathematical concepts more concrete, meaningful, understandable, and accessible. We also want to support you in introducing how to integrate multimedia in your classroom sessions and design lessons that would engage the learners and strengthen their problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding,” said KCFI Vice President Edric Calma.

“On behalf of China Bank Savings, it is my privilege to reaffirm our commitment to a partnership that goes beyond providing support; it is a partnership founded on a shared purpose to empower our educators and contribute to better learning outcomes for Filipino learners,” said Niel Jumawan, First Vice President II and APD Lending Group Head of CBS China Bank Savings.

Serving as the resource speaker was Dr. Peter Esperanza, founder of numberbender.com and a mathematics educator with more than 20 years of teaching experience in both basic and higher education. A De La Salle University graduate and a licensed professional teacher since 2002, he has taught mathematics at high school and college levels and currently teaches at Barstow Community College. With strong advocacy for video-based teaching and learning, Dr. Esperanza’s experience as a YouTube EduCreator highlights this commitment to believing in the power of video materials in providing meaningful learning experiences.

As a trusted educator, he also collaborated with Knowledge Channel during the COVID-19 pandemic in supporting the broadcast of Grade 9 to 12 mathematics lessons from his website and hosted MathDali online when schools were closed. Participants who registered, attended the session, and completed the post-evaluation to gauge their learning were eligible to earn two Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points and a Certificate of Participation.

Unpacking Structural Hurdles in Early Math

Module 1, Understanding Foundational Numeracy and Multimedia Learning, introduced participants to the importance of foundational numeracy and multimedia in supporting children’s mathematical learning. Dr. Esperanza unpacked the structural hurdles educators face when delivering early math instructions, such as introducing abstract symbols before concrete understanding and passive video consumption without active engagement, noting that using video lesson materials helps in building a child’s foundational numeracy. One participant agrees that “Video-based lessons must be intentional. Hindi lang basta nagpapanood ng video lesson. We need to pause for understanding and give questions based on the lesson.” “––Indeed! Teaching must be intentional. Using multimedia can enhance in building foundational numeracy when used smartly,” another participant adds.

To address these challenges, Dr. Esperanza explained that video lessons like MathDali leverage dual-channel (visual and auditory) processing to reduce cognitive load and simplify reasoning. Self-paced videos allow learners to review material privately, helping struggling learners catch up while allowing advanced learners to progress. He emphasized that while technology provides valuable support, teachers remain the essential core of the lesson.

From “Just” to Actually Learning

Module 2, Multimedia Engagement Strategies for Foundational Numeracy, transitions from the why of multimedia learning to the practical how. Dr. Esperanza presented actionable engagement strategies designed to transform video watching from a passive viewing experience into an active, high-impact mathematical activity. Teachers are encouraged to actively guide the lesson using a framework that drives deep reasoning.

At the center of this approach is what he calls the guiding process of the “Predict, Pause, and Apply” framework. By asking students to predict what will happen before watching, their pause-based guesses become a point of curiosity, motivating them to watch and apply by confirming whether their predictions are correct.

Bridging Foundation Principles and Practical Execution

Module 3, Evaluating and Selecting Multimedia Resources for Effective Numeracy Instruction, shifts from theoretical planning to practical implementation by integrating engaging multimedia resources into the classroom.

He demonstrates how to select, evaluate, and embed educational clips directly into lessons using the structured ILAW (Intentions, Learning Experience, Assessment, Ways Forward) framework. This is a lesson-planning structure that starts with a clear purpose, builds the learning experience around it, checks what learners have understood, and ends with next steps for continued learning. Grounding a segment of the session in this framework, Dr. Esperanza deliberately explains that using it showed teachers how to treat videos as purposeful parts of instruction in teaching using video-enhanced lesson plans.
