Knowledge Channel Concludes "Your Knowledge Matters" Online Series with Engaging Mathematics Session
By Rebelyn Beyong
With an audience of over 9,800 teachers, parents, and caregivers, the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI), in partnership with City Savings Bank, successfully concluded its "Your Knowledge Matters: Online Series - Gabay at Kaalaman para sa mga Guro at Tagapag-alaga” online conference. The second session, held on October 4, 2025, as part of the National Teachers’ Month celebration, focused on making mathematics meaningful and accessible for all learners.
The session was expertly led by Prof. Lady Angela Rocena, an Assistant Professor specializing in Mathematics Education at the UP Integrated School. Streaming live on the Knowledge Channel and KCFI Facebook pages, Teacher Angel began by invoking nostalgia with shows like MathTinik and its modern counterpart, MathDali, to illustrate how media can make complex concepts fun and relatable. She set the tone by emphasizing that problem-solving is not just a topic in math, but its very core. "We all share the same goal," she stated, "to help our kids not just to get the right answer, but also to understand how to think and how to solve."
Teacher Angel dedicated the first half of the session to enhancing problem-solving skills. She argued that math "isn't just about formulas... it's about the process of thinking and discovery." She introduced a powerful teaching approach centered on three key elements, or the "3 P's":
The Problem: Begin with a rich, relatable problem that sparks curiosity.
Productive Struggle: Allow learners time to think and even make mistakes, as this is when the brain builds new connections and deep learning occurs.
Processing: Facilitate a discussion where learners share and synthesize different solutions, leading to an "aha moment" of conceptual understanding.
The session also reviewed the classic four-step problem-solving framework popularized by George Pólya—Understand, Plan, Do, and Check—and demonstrated how Knowledge Channel’s MathDali videos can be seamlessly integrated into lessons. Teacher Angel suggested using the videos as Motivation to introduce a problem, as Models to demonstrate thinking processes, and as Mirrors for learners to reflect on and compare their own solution methods.
In the second part, "Connecting Math Videos to Real-life Applications," Teacher Angel championed the idea of making "math talk a part of everyday talk."
She illustrated how parents and teachers can find learning opportunities in daily routines:
Measurement: Engaging children while cooking, estimating travel distances, or figuring out if furniture will fit in a space.
Money: Involving them in budgeting during grocery trips and checking receipts to build financial literacy.
Time: Discussing schedules, travel duration, and daily routines to develop their sense of time.
Data Literacy: Using news reports, online polls, and even simple family surveys to teach them how to interpret data and draw conclusions.
Teacher Angel highlighted that MathDali excels in this area by grounding mathematical concepts in Filipino culture, featuring scenarios with halo-halo, fiestas, and traditional dances like Tinikling, making the lessons uniquely resonant. She concluded by touching on the importance of fostering a "growth mindset," where both educators and learners believe that mathematical abilities can be developed through persistence and effort.
This online training series aimed to empower teachers and caregivers by bridging home and school learning, demonstrating how video-based teaching can build core academic competencies. Participants who completed the two sessions will earn a total of three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points and a certificate of participation. During the whole online series, ten attendees won P250 cash prizes, and six lucky educators received Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library (KCPML) each. KCPML is an offline learning tool containing curriculum-based video lessons, e-games, and session guides designed for various learning modalities.
