Your Knowledge Matters’ Online Series Kicks Off with Focus on Reading, Engages 14,000+ Educators and Parents
By Rebelyn Beyong
With more than 14,000 teachers, parents, and caregivers in attendance and completing the post-evaluation, the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), in partnership with City Savings Bank, successfully launched the first session of its two-day online training conference, “Your Knowledge Matters: Online Series - Gabay at Kaalaman para sa mga Guro at Tagapag-alaga," as part of the National Teachers’ Month celebration.
Held on September 27, 2025, the first session focused on strengthening reading instruction and featured Prof. Yvette Alcazar, Assistant Professor at the College of Education, University of the Philippines - Diliman, as the resource speaker.
Prof. Yvette opened the training by showing a clip from Knowledge Channel’s “Wikaharian” to illustrate the power of a literature-based approach in sparking discussion and learning. She emphasized that stories are the ultimate tool for developing reading comprehension, which she defined as the ability to understand and interpret text—making reading not just a skill but a meaningful act.
To equip the thousands of attendees with practical strategies, she introduced a simple but effective “Before, During, and After” framework for reading lessons:
Before: Activate prior knowledge and pre-teach vocabulary to spark interest.
During: Ask guiding questions while reading or viewing to check understanding.
After: Deepen comprehension through discussions that mix literal, inferential, and critical questions.
In the latter part of the session, Prof. Yvette highlighted how educational videos—like Knowledge Channel’s “Ready, Set, Read!” and “Wikaharian”—can serve as powerful equalizers for learners with diverse needs. She encouraged families to co-view, make use of pause-rewind-repeat strategies, and extend reading lessons into other subjects such as math, science, and the arts through creative activities.
The "Your Knowledge Matters" online series is KCFI's second major online conference this year, following the successful "WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. with Knowledge Channel: An Online Training Series for Teachers on Break" held last May. This series aims to empower teachers and caregivers with the confidence and resources needed to create engaging, research-backed learning experiences. It underscores the vital role of educators in shaping young minds by fostering collaboration and demonstrating how video-based teaching can build core academic competencies.
Licensed Professional Teachers who completed the learning check and post evaluation form will receive 1.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points and a certificate of participation.
The upcoming session of “Your Knowledge Matters: Online Series" will focus on mathematics to enhance learners' numeracy skills and will be facilitated by Prof. Lady Angela Rocena, Assistant Professor specializing in Mathematics Education, UP Integrated School. The session will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. and will be livestreamed on the Knowledge Channel and Knowledge Channel Foundation Facebook page.
