Celebrating National Literacy Month with Knowledge Channel’s Many Forms of Learning

By Janna Kyla Dela Cruz

When we hear the word literacy, most of us think of reading and writing. But literacy is so much more—it’s about numbers, science, creativity, problem-solving, and applying knowledge in daily life. This is what National Literacy Month, celebrated every September, reminds us: that being truly literate means being prepared to understand, create, and thrive in the world.

For learners across the Philippines, the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) makes this vision real through shows that highlight different forms of literacy:

Language and Cultural Literacy
Through Kwentoons, children enter a world of stories that sharpen listening, comprehension, and vocabulary, while also passing on Filipino values and culture.

Numeracy Literacy
Math often feels intimidating, but MathDali makes it fun and approachable. With Kuya Robi and his friends guiding learners through everyday math challenges, learners gain not only problem-solving skills but also confidence to embrace numbers.

Functional Literacy
Literacy also means applying knowledge in real life. AgriKids, created with the Agricultural Training Institute, teaches learners the science of farming in a way that’s simple and engaging—encouraging them to value agriculture and sustainability.

Scientific Literacy
Science Says brings complex concepts to life through experiments and clear explanations, making science exciting and understandable for young audiences.

Creative Literacy
And because literacy is also about imagination, Knowledge Channel’s Art Smart gives learners the chance to express themselves through art, helping them see creativity as a language of its own.

Interactive Learning Literacy
On the digital front, Knowledge On The Go with Marlo Mortel turns learning into a game show where learners test their knowledge in Math, Science, English, and Araling Panlipunan—proving that literacy can be engaging and interactive.

Together, these programs show that literacy is not one-dimensional—it is a spectrum of skills that help children learn, grow, and succeed.

As the nation celebrates National Literacy Month, the Knowledge Channel Foundation reaffirms its commitment to nurturing every type of literacy, ensuring that Filipino learners are ready not only to read and write, but also to imagine, calculate, discover, and create.
