‘WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. with Knowledge Channel: An Online Training Series for Teachers on Break’ Kicks off; Reading Focus in First Session

The Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) held their first of two“WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. with Knowledge Channel: An Online Training Series for Teachers on Break,” together with City Savings Bank. The first session focused on reading where Dr. Portia Padilla, Reading/Literacy Education Program Chair at UP Diliman, served as the session's resource speaker. The online training was conducted on May 23, 2025 and viewed by 230,000 participants.

In the training session Dr. Padilla emphasized the strong correlation between listening comprehension and reading comprehension  in building a solid literacy foundation for learners.  Participants explored the common challenges hindering effective listening and reading comprehension, including limited vocabulary. 

Dr. Padilla  featured research-backed techniques and strategies designed to empower teachers with effective methods for improving students' reading skills such as read-aloud, providing explicit instructions and generating and answering questions based on the read story.

 

To address vocabulary challenges, Dr. Padilla outlined the use of friendly definition and meaning, context clues and analyzing word parts to use for learners to improve their vocabulary skills. The session also included the utilization of video-based learning materials from the Knowledge Channel, specifically highlighting the resources "Wikaharian" and "Ready, Set, Read!"

According to Dr. Padilla, video materials like those produced by Knowledge Channel serve as supplementary tools to enhance teaching and learning, but reiterated that it does not replace the role of teachers or parents. These resources can help teachers create engaging lessons, but ultimately, effective learning depends on teachers' ability to tailor their approach to meet the unique needs of each student.

The training session is designed to support teachers during their break by enhancing their instructional strategies in reading. Knowledge Channel resources, to provide educators with effective, research-based techniques for engaging students in foundational literacy skills. Through a combination of Knowledge Channel videos and interactive discussions, this series equips teachers with practical tools to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences.

Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) aims to equip teachers with new techniques and strategies in preparation for the upcoming school year this June.

First 50,000 registered participants will receive two Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points respectively after each session.

The upcoming "WATCH. LEARN. TEACH. with Knowledge Channel: Online Training Series for Teachers on Break" will focus on mathematics to enhance learners' numeracy skills. The session will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 9:00 A.M. and will be livestreamed on the Knowledge Channel's Facebook page for wider accessibility for teachers.
