The Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) invites everyone to explore history this August, which is National History Month, with a lineup of educational shows on Philippine and world history, along with award-winning documentaries that capture the richness and relevance of the nation’s past. These are available on Knowledge Channel’s platforms: on-air, online, and offline.
Among KCFI’s library of history shows is Pamana, a 25-episode series for Grades 1-4 produced in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Pamana introduces Philippine history, the heraldic code, geography, and the spirit of nationalism, while also highlighting Filipino customs and cultural traditions in an engaging way for the young viewers. Watch a Pamana episode here.
KCFI further promotes pride in Filipino identity through Bayani (Grades 1-6) and Wow (Grades 4-6). Bayani brings to the screen the lives of Filipino heroes, known and unknown and higlights their defining moments in history. It covers Araling Panlipunan (AP) competencies such as understanding local history, fostering Filipino civic responsibility, and appreciating the contributions of national heroes to the country. Wow, on the other hand, is a show that immerses learners in the diverse traditions, arts, and natural wonders of the Philippines. By showcasing the unique folklore, landscapes, cuisine, and stories that define provinces, cities and towns, it supports the learning of AP competencies in local history, geography, cultural identity, and economics, among others. Upcoming episodes will feature Negros Oriental and Occidental, Kidapawan, Siquijor, Sagada, Marinduque, Zamboanga del Norte, and Nueva Vizcaya. For Grades 5 and 6, Kasaysayan TV offers 42 documentary-style episodes tracing the evolution of the Philippines from precolonial times through the Spanish, American, and Japanese occupations to the contemporary era. KCFI has collaborated with the National Historical Institute (now National Historical Commission of the Philippines), AFP Museum and Historical Library Foundation, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Department of National Defense, and the National Museum to ensure content accuracy in every episode. In partnership with the Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma Foundation (JCMPF), KCFI recently produced one Kasaysayan TV episode on the life and legacy of Justice Palma, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and a key figure in framing the 1987 Constitution. The episode features archival materials and stories told by JCMPF, aiming to inspire civic consciousness and leadership among learners. Watch the Kasaysayan TV episode on Justice Palma here.
Finally, Salam High School is a 12-episode educational teleserye for Grades 8 that delves into world history, state policies, cultural sensitivity, conflicts and peace, and diaspora. By exploring these interconnected themes, the show expands the learners’ understanding of both global and local historical contexts, encouraging them to think critically about how the past may inform the present.
