SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — Alternative Learning System (ALS) opportunities in Isla Solomon, Bauang, La Union, have been strengthened with the turnover of a television package and educational materials, improving access to quality education in this geographically isolated community.

The initiative, led by the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) in partnership with the NYK-TDG Friendship Foundation Inc. (NTFF) and the Department of Education (DepEd)-La Union Schools Division Office, equipped the Isla Solomon Community Learning Center with curriculum-based audio-visual tools on March 25.

The Knowledge Channel TV package, preloaded with lessons aligned to the national curriculum, allows teachers to deliver structured and engaging instruction without relying on internet connectivity—a persistent challenge for the island accessible only by boat.

“This initiative goes beyond providing equipment,” said KCFI Vice President Edric Calma.

“It brings more engaging, interactive, and colorful learning experiences to both our youth and educators.”

Joselito Pascua, officer-in-charge of the learning center, added that the support will enhance instruction for ALS learners, including out-of-school youth and adult learners.

“Our learners now have access to the same visual and engaging materials available in more connected areas,” he said.

The project also included a technical training session for teachers to maximize the use of multimedia resources, particularly in multigrade and ALS settings.

NTFF representatives noted that the effort forms part of their continuing support for underserved communities, with plans to sustain engagement through future programs, including livelihood initiatives for local families.

The rollout in Isla Solomon demonstrates a scalable approach to bridging education gaps in remote areas, supporting national efforts to promote inclusive and flexible learning opportunities across the Philippines. (AMB/AIHR/AMTF, PIA Ilocos Region).
