Lopez Envi Festival 2026 Kickoff Sparks Collective Climate Action

By Rebelyn S. Beyong

PASIG CITY - With the goal of fostering sustainability initiatives and sparking ideas for collective environmental impact, more than 70 Kapamilyas across the Lopez Group CSR community celebrated Philippine Environment Month this June through the López Envi Festival, which kicked off last June 4 at the Rockwell Business Center (RBC) Tower 3 in Pasig City. The event rallied under the theme “Kapamilya Para sa Kapaligiran: Climate Action Now.”

Emphasizing the urgency to shift from passive environmental concern to deliberate, habitual, and collective action, Lopez Group Foundation, Inc. (LGFI) President and Executive Director Mercedes Lopez-Vargas formally welcomed the participants with a profound reflection on interconnectedness. She reminded the diverse crowd of stakeholders that tackling the overwhelming scale of the climate crisis requires an intentional commitment to embedding regenerative choices into daily corporate and personal lifestyles.

Following the welcome message, Oscar M. Lopez Center (OML Center) Executive Director and Lopez Group Envi Cluster Lead Dr. Rodel D. Lasco contextualized the pressing urgency of the event by presenting a visual analysis of critical global climate risks, specifically highlighting the destructive double whammy of extreme weather events and natural resource shortages. He underscored how the combination of natural phenomena like the super El Niño with human-induced global warming threatens both regional biodiversity and the fundamental operational stability of businesses worldwide.

Driving meaningful climate commitments

In her keynote address, Philippine Sustainability Intelligence Association (Sustina) Co-founder and Executive Director Anna Reyes challenged the attendees to evaluate their past environmental pledges, urging them to make genuine, lasting commitments rather than passive promises that ultimately fail to translate into tangible impact.

She highlighted that while Filipinos naturally care for the environment and actively pursue incredible grassroots innovations in remote areas, the broader societal and corporate systems often make sustainable choices difficult to enact on autopilot. "The people are not the problem; the rooms I have sat in are full of people who care, just like you," Reyes emphasized.

Reyes further urged the participants to actively seek out and choose better, regenerative options in their daily corporate tasks, effectively breaking the cycle of default decision-making that harms the planet. "The commitment that you make today is only as real as the decision it connects to," she stated.

Equipping Kapamilyas through learning sessions

Weather and Climate 101: How to Read the Weather Forecasts

The morning program equipped participants with highly practical environmental knowledge, starting with OML Center’s Jerome Tolentino leading a comprehensive scientific discussion on the critical nuances of weather forecasting and climate variability on his topic Weather and Climate 101: How to Read the Weather Forecasts. He simplified complex meteorological phenomena for the audience, explaining how localized thunderstorms, seasonal monsoons, and extreme phenomena directly disrupt both daily life and large-scale business operations across the archipelago.

Composting and Urban Gardening at Home

Transitioning to the topic of Composting and Urban Gardening at Home, Tanya Flores of Pi Energy shared her inspiring personal journey of implementing natural cold composting within a space-constrained condominium setting. She narrated how a dedicated household practice evolved into an officially recognized, building-wide community program that successfully diverted a staggering 345 kilograms of kitchen scraps from overflowing local landfills in just one quarter.

Single-Use-Plastics in the Office: Where Are We Now?

Addressing the pressing issue of corporate waste management head-on in his topic Single-Use-Plastics in the Office: Where Are We Now?, First Gen Corporation’s Environmental, Safety, and Compliance Assurance Manager Patrick Correa tackled the ongoing transition and strict implementation of First Philippine Holdings’ (FPH) single-use plastic policy. He presented compelling data showing significant historical reductions in plastic waste generation across various operational facilities, proving that deliberate behavioral changes effectively combat the 400 million tons of plastic waste produced globally each year.

"Drop IT For Good" e-waste collection campaign

Rounding out the incredibly informative morning sessions, First Gen proudly partnered with HMR Envirocycle Philippines to officially launch the "Drop IT For Good" e-waste collection campaign with bins stationed across multiple strategic floors of the RBC Tower 3. The ceremonial bin launch provided employees with a secure, globally certified, and highly accessible channel to discard old personal electronics without inadvertently contributing to the massive global landfill crisis.

Engr. Wilsie Sanchez of HMR Envirocycle educated the crowd on the severe data security risks, carbon emission threats, and massive pollution control issues associated with the improper disposal of electronic waste, passionately advocating for the circular economy model of extending device lifecycles.

Launching digital solutions and GreenFlix showing

The afternoon program smoothly eased into the realm of innovative conservation efforts with the exciting official launch of the First Gen-Energy Development Corporation (EDC) BINHI CommuniTree App, a platform designed to integrate modern mobile technology with critical biodiversity protection. This groundbreaking mobile application was introduced to fundamentally digitize corporate reforestation efforts, actively allowing users to dynamically track threatened native tree species while directly supporting the pressing educational needs of local host communities.

The app bridges the traditional gap between abstract corporate sustainability goals and actionable, on-the-ground environmental restoration. "These stories reflect narratives on climate action, biodiversity conservation, and the importance of protecting ecosystems," Rich Paul Cosio of EDC-BINHI proudly noted regarding their overarching technological and environmental mission.

Following the app launch, the GreenFlix Film Marathon brought urgent environmental narratives to life through the medium of powerful, emotionally resonant cinematic storytelling facilitated collaboratively by the OML Center, EDC, and Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI).

The film showing featured few critically acclaimed Mga Kwento ng Klima short films from OML Center alongside one of two captivating WOW documentary episodes produced in partnership with KCFI and EDC which is WOW Kidapawan, beautifully highlighting not just Kidapawan in Cotabato but also the unique habitats of the Apo Myna in Mount Apo.

“Climate action starts with education. When children learn to love and care for the environment, they grow into adults who will protect it. Through our programs, Knowledge Channel Foundation is helping nurture a generation of Filipinos who are ready to act for a more sustainable future," said Rina Lopez, President and Co-Founder of KCFI.

KCFI Vice President Edric Calma introduced these documentaries as vital educational resources that are now widely distributed to countless schools nationwide to actively inspire the next generation of dedicated environmental stewards. "These are [two] episodes that we hope you'd enjoy watching, at the same time, [we] learn from," Calma warmly shared with the audience.

The episodes, including WOW Negros episode featuring Visayan Hornbill or tariktik, are now available online and offline via Knowledge Channel portable media libraries (KCPML) and Knowledge Channel TV (KCTV) packages. Click here to watch these episodes.

Exploring sustainability at the booths

Various interactive exhibition booths were set up for the event, where employees and guests explored Lopez Group CSRs and partners championing diverse corporate sustainability initiatives and grassroots environmental awareness programs.

The KCFI booth instantly captivated attendees with its engaging "Knowledge on the Go" interactive game, rigorously testing their environmental awareness through fun educational trivia to win exclusive merchandise.

The ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) prominently highlighted their Citizen Science project, proudly showcasing real-world marine conservation tools utilized in Mabini, Batangas, and detailing how dedicated local residents are actively trained to rigorously monitor coral health amidst extreme weather disturbances.

Meanwhile, the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST) featured "MOD" (Master of Disasters), an educational board game purposefully designed to teach crucial disaster preparedness and rapid response strategies to children.

Climate Fresk Philippines challenged curious participants with an interactive card game demonstrating the incredibly complex cause-and-effect relationships of climate change.

EDC-BINHI booth offered a uniquely rich blend of biodiversity conservation and direct community support by selling beautiful native tree seedlings alongside premium, locally sourced organic coffee harvested directly from the rich soils of Mount Apo and Leyte.

Showcasing grassroots circularity at its finest, First Gen proudly displayed upcycled, comfortable pillows and home essentials crafted from otherwise discarded single-use plastics by environmentally conscious students from Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija.

The Eugenio Lopez Foundation, Inc (ELFI)/Lopez Museum and Library (LML) beautifully fused cultural heritage with modern sustainability, offering crafted notebooks and embroidered bags deeply inspired by historical collections like the artworks of Juan Luna.

The OML Center demonstrated their innovative SEAnarios PH tool, an interactive sea-level rise tracker precisely projecting coastal flooding risks across Philippine cities up to the year 2100 and showcasing other initiatives like Philippine Climate Change Assessment Reports.

Finally, the Sikat Solar Challenge Foundation Inc. promoted equitable renewable energy access, sharing their highly successful community initiatives of providing vital solar and wind power to off-grid areas. They highlighted these achievements by showcasing organic coffee grown by farmers from their partner communities.

As the Lopez Group CSR community boldly steps forward into Environment Month, the vibrant and educational kickoff comprehensively serves as a powerful reminder that our collective, deliberate actions today will ultimately build the resilient world of tomorrow.
