5 Things to Learn from Watching Wikaharian this Buwan ng Wika!
By Janna Kyla Dela Cruz
Pasig City, Philippines – Every August, Filipinos celebrate Buwan ng Wika, a month dedicated to promoting the use of the Filipino language and deepening appreciation for the nation’s culture. This year, learners can take part in the celebration by watching Wikaharian, Knowledge Channel’s flagship Filipino reading program produced in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Now on its Grade 2 installment, Wikaharian features Ate Michelle and her friend Kwashiwashi as they explore the Philippines through stories, music, games, and cultural traditions. More than just a reading show, Wikaharian helps young learners strengthen their Filipino skills while fostering pride in their heritage.
Here are five things children can learn from watching Wikaharian:
1. Stronger Reading Skills
Each episode is carefully designed to build fluency, comprehension, and confidence in reading Filipino. By following along with the lessons, learners develop essential skills that serve as a foundation for lifelong learning.
2. Richer Vocabulary
Through stories, folk tales, and songs, students are introduced to new Filipino words and expressions. This expanded vocabulary helps them communicate more effectively and appreciate the depth of the language.
3. Deeper Cultural Appreciation
Wikaharian integrates local traditions, values, and heritage into its lessons, showing children that learning Filipino goes hand in hand with understanding what it means to be part of a rich and diverse culture.
4. Fun and Engaging Learning
The program uses animation, music, and games to keep lessons lively and interactive. This makes reading enjoyable, encouraging children to see language not just as a school subject but as an exciting adventure.
5. Meaningful Filipino Values
Beyond academics, Wikaharian highlights values such as respect, kindness, and love for family and community—reminders of the heart of being Filipino.
This Buwan ng Wika, Wikaharian offers students and families a meaningful way to celebrate the national language. By combining reading instruction with culture-based content, the series not only improves literacy but also strengthens national identity.
Wikaharian Grade 2 airs daily at 8:00 AM with replays at 8:00 PM on Knowledge Channel. Episodes are also available on A2Z, Kapamilya Channel, Sky Cable, and online through Knowledge Channel’s social media platforms.
