Wikaharian's 25 New Episodes Promote Filipino Culture & Grade 2 Reading
Pasig City, Philippines – June 26, 2025 — The Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI), in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), officially launches Wikaharian for Grade 2—a continuation of the acclaimed educational video series designed to promote reading proficiency through the use of the local culture and arts as a springboard for teaching reading in Filipino.
The newly produced 25-episode series builds on the success of the first 50 Wikaharian Grade 2 learning videos initially aired in 2022, and the 80 Wikaharian Grade 1 learning videos launched in 2020 which were also funded by Senator Loren through the NCCA. This new installment continues to follow the adventures of Ate Michelle and her new friend, Kwashiwashi, as they explore the Philippines through language, culture, and storytelling. The series was created specifically for Grade 2 Filipino learners and is aligned with the Department of Education’s (DepEd) curriculum and teacher’s guides.
Each 10-minute episode uses familiar formats such as animation, music, games, and live action to teach reading while immersing children in Filipino traditions and values, and real-life cultural contexts, including indigenous folk tales and songs. By integrating the country’s rich cultural heritage into foundational reading lessons, Wikaharian not only strengthens literacy but also fosters national pride and identity among young viewers.
Rina Lopez - President and Executive Director, Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc.
“This is more than just teaching children how to read which is very important,” said Ms. Rina Lopez, President and Executive Director of KCFI. “It’s about helping them develop an appreciation and discover who they are as Filipinos through our stories, songs, dances, and values.”
The official launch event was held on June 26, 2025, at the Rockwell Business Center in Ortigas, Pasig City. It gathered key partners from the Department of Education, NCCA, the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, and other education and culture advocates. Highlights included the unveiling of the new episodes, and a renewed pledge to continue advocating for accessible, culture-based education.
Hon. Loren Legarda - Senator, Republic of the Philippines
“The Wikaharian series is a testament to our commitment to nurturing a generation of Filipino learners who are not only literate but also culturally grounded and socially compassionate,” shared Senator Loren Legarda.
Wikaharian Grade 2 airs on Knowledge Channel’s Filipino Grade 2 curriculum block every day from Monday to Sunday at 8:00 AM, with replays at 8:00pm. It will also be available on the Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library, Knowledge Channel TV, and social media platforms, making it accessible to schools and homes nationwide.
Based on KCFI’s 2020 program evaluation in Sta. Rosa and Marikina, the Wikaharian Grade 1—also funded by Sen. Legarda coursed through the NCCA—videos were found to significantly improve reading skills among learners, including at-risk students. Just in time for the new school year, the new Grade 2 season builds on this success, further enriching early literacy through engaging, culturally grounded educational content, while also expanding access to quality learning resources for young Filipino learners.
Through this initiative, the Knowledge Channel Foundation and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts reaffirm their joint mission: to help every Filipino child learn with meaning, confidence, and heart.
