“Sineskwela”, “Bayani”, and “Hiraya Manawari” are back by popular demand as thousands of Filipino children stay home during the Enhanced Community Quarantine.
The 90’s educational TV (ETV) shows that used to air every morning on ABS-CBN return as part of the Stay at Home, Learn at Home campaign of Knowledge Channel Foundation and ABS-CBN. Pioneered by former ABS-CBN Foundation head Ms. Gina Lopez, shows like Sineskwela, Bayani, and Hiraya Manawari helped jumpstart the use of media and technology to help educate Filipino learners. These were crafted in partnership with the Department of Education (formerly the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports) and continues to air via the Knowledge Channel, the first and only curriculum-based television channel in the country.
Sineskwela, whose catchy theme tune was composed and written by Ryan Cayabyab, discussed a variety of Science topics through engaging visuals, music, and creative story-telling. Bayani, a show about Philippine History, transforms textbook narratives into episodes that re-enacted the lives and battles of Filipino heroes. Hiraya Manawari, which means “Reach Your Dreams”, was a show that highlighted values education through the adaptation of Filipino fables, folk tales, legends, and original stories.
