| April 29, 2010 |
Last April 23, high school faculty members from Miriam College along with volunteers from Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. conducted an outreach program in Peñafrancia Elementary School, Antipolo and Malanday Elementary School, Marikina.
The said outreach effort was called Gurong Lingkod Program and it involved a series of seminars given by Miriam College teachers to the faculty of the two KCFI partner schools. Aside from useful information about teaching strategies, teachers from Miriam College also discussed how Knowledge Channel programs can be used as effective tools for teaching and how the teachers can maximize the use of the programs for the benefit of their students. Eleven high school teachers from Miriam College went to conduct the seminars in Peñafrancia Elementary School where 57 of their teachers participated. These seminars aimed to help teachers understand and deal with learning difficulties, enhance reading practices and improve their teaching strategies.
At the same time, 25 teachers from Miriam College headed teacher seminars at Malanday Elementary School about personality development, maintaining positive energy at work, environmental education, classroom management and modern strategies for teaching math and science. Over 100 teachers from Malanday Elementary School took part in the event. According to Ms. Lora Milan, a high school teacher from Miriam College, the topics that were discussed in the seminars were suggested by the public school teachers themselves. Her co-teacher, Ms. Veronica Villarin, added that they have decided to organize seminars such as these because they realized that many public school teachers lacked resources to enhance their teaching strategies and knowledge. She also added that through the Gurong Lingkod Program, they are able to reach and affect more students when the public school teachers apply what they have learned from the seminars. |
